The Lord be with you
Most of us, when we read the Bible, do not question how we understand it. It seems rather straight forward. Then we come across a passage like John 3:14, where Jesus references Moses making and lifting up a bronze serpent in the wilderness and then indicated it pointed to how he would die, and we begin to suspect that more lies under the surface (Numbers 21:9). We get the same feeling from the story of Jacob and Esau and how it is handled in books written after Genesis (Genesis 25:19-34; Malachi 1:3; Romans 9:13). There are other such mystery passages. Are we missing something?
This coming Sunday’s Old Testament lesson is Genesis 12:1-9. On the surface, it is a straight forward story about Abraham moving from Haran to Canaan. But is there more? Is it also about Jesus? Our sermon will be titled “Thinking About Abraham.”
Our other lessons are Psalm 121:1-8, Romans 4:1-8, 13-17, and John 3:1-17. Our hymns will be “Jesus, Refuge of the Weary” (LSB 423), “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less” (LSB 575), and “God Loved the World So That He gave” (LSB 571).
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor
