The Lord be with you
We all know that acts of mercy are part of our lives as Christians. However, understanding the biblical foundation for such acts may be lacking in most of us. We help because we “know” it is the right thing to do. We “feel” that we should reach out with the Love of God in Christ Jesus to those in need. However such “feelings” can also lead to concerns about how we go about such acts of mercy. Is it okay to join other Christian groups, or even non-Christian groups, in extending mercy? What about some sort of join venture with the government? What place does the Gospel have? Do the Lutheran Confessions offer us any guidance in the area of showing mercy?
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, in convention in 2013, commended the study “Theology for Mercy” to its member congregations for study. This study was written by Matthew Harrison, our current president. It provides answers for such questions based solidly on the biblical witness and the Lutheran Confessions. As the Synod has commended this study to us, so I also commend it to the members and friends of Our Redeemer.
