The Lord be with you
The great reformer Martin Luther is one of the most quoted people of all time. These three short quotes help us understand why.
Luther, commenting on Galatians 1:7, said
Either Christ must abide, and the Law perish; or the Law must abide, and Christ perish. It is impossible for Christ and the Law to agree and to share the reign over a conscience.
Luther, Martin Luther’s Works 26 (Lectures on Galatians 1535) 54
Martin Luther, commenting on Galatians 1:11-12, said,
Therefore the supreme worship of God that a man can offer, the Sabbath of Sabbaths, is to practice true godliness, to hear and read the Word. On the other hand, nothing is more dangerous than to become tired of the Word. Therefore anyone who is so cold that he thinks he knows enough and gradually begins to loath the Word has lost Christ and the Gospel.
Luther, Martin Luther’s Works 26 (Lectures on Galatians 1535) 64
Martin Luther, commenting on the phrase “to reveal His Son to me” in Galatians 1:16, said,
Therefore only the Gospel reveals the Son of God. Oh, if only one could distinguish carefully here and not look for the Law in the Gospel but keep it as separate from the Law as heaven is distant from the earth!
