When Lot honored Your ministers in Your stead, he said, “Behold, Lord, dear Adon.” This is by rights Your proper title, O Jesus Christ, for David too calls You this: “The LORD (Jehovah) said to My Lord (Adon)” (Ps. 110:1). Adon comes from ‘edon, which means “pillar, foundation, post, basis, firm support.” Oh Lord Jesus, how comforting Your name is! There is no doubt that You are my heart’s mighty Pillar, my soul’s Foundation-Post, the Basis of my salvation, the firm Support of my faith. Long ago the ramshackle walls of my troubled heart would have collapsed, long ago I would have lost hope, had You not strengthened my faith with Your grace and rescued me from my weakness. O Lord Jesus, how often my heart crumbles in great anguish. Time and again I collapse in sorrow. Do not abandon me! As pillars support huge arches and high walls, as foundations hold up houses, as tight trusses carry a heavy floor—so may You carry and bear me and all mine, and I will stand firm against all the gates of hell.
