If the devil ever tries to attack you, if he ever troubles you with your sins, defy him in the name of the Lord Jesus: Begone, evil spirit! You have no power or authority over me. You are not my Lord. I have another Lord, whose own I am. He will not let go of me. “Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is!” “If He is for me (and on my side), who can stand against me?” [Rom. 8:31]. When you are going to die, say with Stephen, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” [Acts 7:59]. Consider the words of St. Paul: “Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s” (Rom. 14:8). Luther once wrote these beautiful words as a reminder on the wall of an innkeeper who would not let him pay for his meal, and said, “We are the Lord’s and the lords.” In other words, we are His dominion, and by His grace we ourselves have dominion over sin, death, devil, hell, and eternal damnation. This is sublime, for it really is true.
