A 4th Century Hymn

AmbroseOfMilanEternal builder of the skies,
Dread ruler of the night and day,
With glories thou has blessed our eyes,
To drive the stain of pride away.

O Jesus, guard thy wandering sheep
From thy sweet fold ne’er more to stray;
Our feeble steps from danger keep,
And fear shall melt and fall away.

Shine on our souls, O Living Light;
From stain of error keep us free;
Let songs of praise by day and night,
And vows of love arise to thee.

Now let us sing in anthems sweet
To God the Father and the Son,
Who with the Holy Paraclete*
Forever reigneth Three in One. Amen.

Ambrose, Bishop of Milan (333-397)

* Paraclete is a transliteration of the Greek in places like John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7 and 1 John 2:1. It can be translated with words like “helper,” “advocate” and “counselor.” Here it is a title for the Holy Spirit.
