We Were All Once Foolish

Luther on Titus 3:3

… Foolish. You will find such men in the government. Do not be offended. Have epiekeia [reasonableness], and think to yourself: “That prince is crazy. I remember the time when I was too.” Apeithas, faithless. In the public realm or in the household you will see some who do not willingly obey the government or their parents or masters. Then you will become angry, but time was when you did not obey willingly either and did not know that the government is a divine ordinance. If you were to find such people now, you must bear with them. Take out the record book, and you will find that you, too, have been disobedient to parents as well as to magistrates.
