The Way, the Truth, the Life

A prayer from Chrysostom, quoted by Johann Gerhard:

We give You thanks, O Lord, because You have provided us with three things: to know the truth, which we did not know because we were holding to falsity; to know the way, because we did not know through what way we should walk; to know the life, because we were clinging to death and death had been handed down to us from that man whom it was said, “You will surely die.” He gave life, to the dead, offered truth to liars, showed the way to the straying.

Gerhard goes on to quote Hilary:

He does not lead us into errant and pathless wastes, for He is the way. He does not lead through lies, for He is the truth. He does not leave us in the error of death, for He is life.
