Orphan Grain Train News Flash

October 2018

Dear Friend of Orphan Grain Train Mid-Atlantic,

Mid-Atlantic residents have experienced a deluge of rain in the past several weeks. My backyard gauge says rainfall is 10” ahead of last year’s total! But the woes of a soggy back yard pale in comparison to the sufferings of thousands from floodwaters in the Carolinas. Even without a warehouse we are called to help others in need, and the need now is for hurricane victims…

Hurricane Florence Relief – The loss of our warehouse has changed how we give, not our ability to do so. Our board unanimously agreed to use $5,500 to purchase materials for Scrub Bucket Kits from Home Depot – a 5-gallon pail, cleaning solution (Clorox), mop, broom, scrub brush, cleanser, trash bags and rubber gloves. Over 100 of these kits will be trucked to our Maryland Branch in two shipments, beginning October 4th. The majority of recipients are LCMS churches in the Carolinas who can store materials for distribution-as-needed to storm victims.

We also encourage Thrivent members to apply for Action Team Dollars to make Hygiene Kits. Thrivent will provide promotional materials and $250 in seed money to help assemble the kits which consist of a bath towel, soap, wash cloth, tooth brush, tooth paste, comb and band aids. (Go to for directions.) When you apply be sure to use promo code, Hurricane Florence to expedite your order. Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Malvern, PA, has already secured two Action Team packs and plans to assemble Hygiene Kits in early October; these will also be distributed through our Maryland branch. If your group or congregation wants to participate please contact Cliff Kraft, 610-420-0380, to arrange transportation of your kits.

Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends – The big day is Tuesday, October 16th! Your $5 donation will secure a shopping pass to Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends Day event. Treat yourself to discounts up to 25% at any store location from 8am to 11pm. (Even cosmetics are on sale!) Enjoy free refreshments and register to win door prizes and shopping sprees. Last year we raised $790, this year we have the potential to raise $4,000 thanks to an anonymous grant-matching offer up to $2,000. We’re going-all-out and setting up tables in seven (7!) stores on the 16th. Look for our OGT volunteers in the Neshaminy, Coventry, Exton Square, and Granite Run Malls in PA; and the Concord, Christiana and Dover Malls in DE. If you can’t get a pass from OGT locally there’s still time to ‘order through the mail.’ Send your check to Orphan Grain Train-Boscov’s Passes, 89 Line Rd, Malvern, PA, 19355, by October 5 so we have time to mail it back to you. We hope to take full advantage of this generous matching gift; will you give $5.00 to help people in need?

Warehouse Update – Since mid-August branch manager Cliff Kraft has been working with commercial real estate agents and has seen several different facilities. So far nothing suitable has turned up. We have posted our work space need on our OGT MAB webpage, and through online newsletters of the LCMS and LWML Eastern and Southeastern Districts. Contacts have also been made through Thrivent and friends in the ELCA. We know continued prayer will get us to the right solution!

As we wait patiently for the Holy Spirit’s guidance please join with our volunteers to raise funds for our branch and help people who have lost so much at the hands of Hurricane Florence.

“…He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.” Hebrews 6:10 NLT

Keep praying for a warehouse!
